a bag of drawers
2024
A palm leaf collected during an evening in Hong Kong, a found tree branch, a deconstructed then reconstructed pair of antique drawers, raw silk tussah.
The collection and artefactualisation of a memory inthe form of small objects, crumbs and pieces that would settle at the bottom of a well-used bag.
An investigation into its distinct properties - the thick parallel ridges of the palm leaf, its similarity to leather - being able to be wet molded, sharing properties to both wood and fabric, allowing for sewing, drilling, molding.
The merge of furniture and accessory. merging the security, domesticity, stability of furniture with the physical and emotional intimacy of accessories.
The top handle of ‘a bag of drawers’. Photographed in my own wardrobe with my 1920s Goerz Roll-Tengor.
